A case study panel discussion with a focus on the mental health and wellness of first responders, affected communities, and survivors. Panelists bring unique experiences in healing related to traumatic rescues, community healing from natural disasters, and survivorship.

This discussion aims to deepen understanding of this community dynamic, to learn from the experiences of first-responders, victims, and community members about the healing process as it relates to mental health. To raise awareness of the complexity and impact of these relationships on healing.

  • 12:00PM: Lunch & USLA Ben Carlson Lifeguard of the Year Award Presentation
  • 2:00PM - 4:00PM: Beach Guardian Workshop (Free / Optional) – Kuhio Beach

In 63% of water related emergencies in Hawai’i, a bystander is the first person on scene. The Hawaiian Lifeguard Association Beach Guardian Workshop teaches skills to community members to act quickly and how to use common resources (rescue tubes, surfboards, etc) if they find themselves in an emergency when a lifeguard or first responder is not available.

This is a free community service workshop. HLA has invited a school group to attend, we would like for USLA members to also join us with the hope that this program will be duplicated by other agencies in their communities.
