American Lifeguard Magazine Editor Application
Share |

The United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) invites expressions of interest from persons or corporations to edit and oversee the publishing, mailing, and advertising for American Lifeguard Magazine (ALM). This invitation is open until June 25, 2015. We anticipate interest from three primary sources:

1)     Beach lifeguards and former beach lifeguards with editing skills and experience

2)     Professional editors and writers

3)     Corporate providers of nonprofit or trade magazine publishing services

Background: American Lifeguard Magazine (ALM) has been published by the USLA for decades. It is published and mailed three times a year, primarily to approximately 13,000 members, who are professional beach lifeguards, former beach lifeguards, and junior lifeguards in the United States. Publication dates are June 1, November 1, and February 1 each year. Copies of ALM in PDF format can be reviewed HERE.

ALM has historically been edited by a current or former beach lifeguard. The most recent contract for publishing included an independent contractor payment of $750 per issue (based on meeting performance deadlines) and incentives for attracting and retaining advertising.

The USLA currently contracts with a graphic designer to assemble the content and contracts with a publishing house to mail the magazine. Thus, the primary roles of the editor have been to solicit content, select and prioritize content, edit content, liaise with and oversee the graphic designer’s work, and oversee the work of the publishing and mailing house. The USLA Executive Committee reviews the magazine pre-publication to ensure that the content is consistent with the organization’s needs and priorities. The editor also maintains relations with advertisers, maintains communications with the USLA Treasurer with respect to budgets, solicits master mailing lists for each edition from the USLA Membership Committee Chair, bills advertisers, maintains budgets with income and expense reports, and produces bi-annual reports to the USLA Board of Directors.

Proposals: The USLA welcomes expressions of interest from individuals and organizations. The USLA is willing to consider modifications to the current model (e.g. an all-in-one magazine publishing house) as part of the proposal. Proposals should include appropriate background regarding the proposer’s skills and abilities to edit and bring to publication, in accordance with established deadlines, a magazine aimed at beach lifeguards and open water rescuers. If the proposer is experienced in beach lifeguarding and open water rescue, the proposer should state the basis of this expertise. If the proposer is not experienced in this field, the proposal should state how proposer will ensure that content meets the needs of the readership and the USLA.
