• Estimations of rip current rescues and drowning in the United States
  Rip currents are the greatest hazard to swimmers on surf beaches, but due to a lack of consistent incident reporting in many countries, it is often difficult to quantify the number of rip-current-related rescues and drowning deaths occurring along surf beaches. This study examines this problem using rescue data reported to the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) by surf beach rescuers from 1997 through 2016.
• Examination of Positive Youth Development and Identity in the Junior Lifeguard Program
  The purposes of this study were to assess JG programs for positive youth development (PYD) and then compare the evidence of PYD to parents’ perceptions of development derived from their children’s program participation. Eleven programs nationwide were studied. The take-aways are particularly relevant to JG program managers and lifeguard program administrators. Author Danielle Wong Vickland, PhD.

• Safety Assessments
  The United States Lifesaving Association and USLA officials have conducted a number of comprehensive safety assessments of beach areas throughout the United States. In some cases, these were conducted due to concerns about unusual levels of drowning. In other cases, these were conducted due to requests for expert advice.
